Im Jahre 1972 war Elton John bereits ein aufgehender Stern in Amerika, obwohl man ihn beim oberflächlichen Zuhören immer noch der Sänger/Songwriter-Ecke zurechnete, was am Erfolg von "Your Song" und "Levon" liegen mochte. Mit Honky Château änderte sich dies schlagartig. Angefangen bei dem erfolgreichen "Honky Cat", einem mitreißenden New Orleans-haften R&B-Kraftwerk, das diese irrwitzige Sammlung von Songs eröffnet. Mit diesem Album erwies sich John als begnadeter Pop-Handwerker und musikalischer Überflieger, der vom Countryrock bis zum bluesigen Rock einfach alles draufhatte. Herausragend sind jedoch zwei Riesenballaden: "Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters" (die bisher beste Leistung des jungen Sängers) und die Hitsingle "Rocket Man" (die viele Rockfans über der Frage entzweite, welches die bessere Space Oddity war -- diese, oder die von Bowie). Bernie Taupin zeigte zudem mit "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" in seinen Texten langsam eine etwas dunklere Seite. --Bill Holdship --

Mit altmodisch wirkendem Klimper-Klavier, satten Bläsern und sentimentalen Untertönen gehört dieses Album aus dem Jahr 1972 noch immer zu Elton Johns besten. Kein Song hat viel Tiefgang, aber alle zusammen sind pure Pop- Unterhaltung der angenehmsten Art. Und mit Rocket Man gibt's hier außerdem eine Meister-Ballade. Schon das Original hatte einen guten räumlichen Klang, war allerdings in den Höhen recht aggressiv. Die goldbeschichtete Ultradisc schafft in dieser Hinsicht Abhilfe. Mehr braucht der Mensch nicht.


Stereoplay
Zweifellos leisteten die Remastering-Experten von Mobile Fidelity her- vorragende Arbeit bei dieser goldbedampften CD-Neuauflage des Elton-John- Klassikers von 1972. Fast ohne Bandrauschen erklingen die zehn Songs - darunter der Hit "Rocket Man" - in vorzüglicher Frequenzbalance transparenter und "natürlicher" denn je. Das wird besonders die amerika- nischen Fans freuen, die bislang mit einer tontechnisch miserablen CD vorliebnehmen mußten. Für den deutschen Markt ist jedoch festzuhalten, daß der teure Nobel-"Silberling" keinesfalls um Klassen besser klingt als die reguläre CD (DJM 829 249-2) - und die kostet nicht einmal 20 DM.

Considerably lighter than Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau is a rollicking collection of ballads, rockers, blues, country-rock, and soul songs. On paper, it reads like an eclectic mess, but it plays as the most focused and accomplished set of songs Elton John and Bernie Taupin ever wrote. The skittering boogie of "Honky Cat" and the light psychedelic pop of "Rocket Man" helped send Honky Chateau to the top of the charts, but what is truly impressive about the album is the depth of its material. From the surprisingly cynical and nasty "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" to the moving ballad "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters," John is at the top of his form, crafting immaculate pop songs with memorable melodies and powerful hooks. While Taupin's lyrics aren't much more comprehensible than before, John delivers them with skill and passion, making them feel more substantial than they are. But what makes Honky Chateau a classic is the songcraft, and the way John ties disparate strands of roots music into distinctive and idiosyncratic pop — it's one of the finest collections of mainstream singer/songwriter pop of the early '70s.
