Nachdem diese Art-Punk Band aus New York City die 80er Jahre damit verbracht hatte, die alternative Untergrundszene mit ihren seltsam gestimmten Gitarren und der einfallsreichen Struktur ihrer Songs zu terrorisieren, begannen sie das nächste Jahrzehnt mit einem Deal bei einer größeren Plattenfirma und dem Entschluß, Rockmusik für alle, die es angeht, laut und sexy zu machen. Die Single "Kool Thing", die einen Auszug aus Public Enemys "Chuck D" präsentiert, bewies sofort, daß sie sowohl die dynamische Kontrolle als auch die Variationsbreite hatten, um dieser Herausforderung gerecht zu werden. Gestützt auf ein Album schöner, von Riffs dominierter Hymnen ("Dirty Boots", "Titanium Expose") und Augenblicke ausgiebiger glücklicher Effekte (Lee Ranaldos "Mote"), setzte Sonic Youth neue Standards dafür, wie Hard Rock in den 90er Jahren klingen würde. Es wundert einen nicht, daß Nirvana sie so hoch einschätzte. --Rob O'Connor

Anfang der 80er traten Sonic Youth an, um die dunkle Seite des Rock'n'Roll zu zelebrieren. Weitab von gnägigen Hörgewohnheiten bewegt sich auch das 86er Album E.V.O.L. Verzerrte Gitarren, pulsierendes Schlagzeug und hypnotischer Gesang führen in jene apokalyptische Klanglandschaft, in der schon Jim Morrison und Lou Reed die menschliche Psyche ausloteten. Madonna, Sean And Me rechnet surrealistisch mit dem Mainstream-Pop ab: Musikalisch kreuzigt die Band Madonnas Ehemann Sean Penn und droht kalifornischen Strand-Beauties mit Bomben.

Any doubts as to the continuing relevance of Sonic Youth upon their jump to major-label status were quickly laid to rest by Goo, their follow-up to the monumental Daydream Nation. While paling in the shadow of its predecessor, the record is nevertheless a defiant call to arms against mainstream musical values; the Geffen logo adorning the disc is a moot point — Goo is, if anything, a portrait of Sonic Youth at their most self-indulgently noisy and contentious, covering topics ranging from Karen Carpenter ("Tunic") to UFOs ("Disappearer") to dating Jesus' mom ("Mary-Christ"). Even Public Enemy's Chuck D joins the fracas on the single "Kool Thing," which teeters on the brink of a cultural breakthrough but falls just shy of the mark; the same could be said of Goo itself — by no means a sellout, it nevertheless lacks the coherence and force of the group's finest work, and the opportunity to violently rattle the mainstream cage slips by.
