Keine Frage: Dieses Doppel-Album zählt zu den legendären Live-Konserven der Rock-Geschichte. Dokumentiert der Mitschnitt vom März 1971 doch eine Band auf der Höhe ihrer Spiellust und -laune. Eine Höhe, aus der sie noch im gleichen Jahr durch den Unfalltod des begnadeten Allman-Bruders Duane "Skydog" heruntergerissen wurde. Sein virtuoses Slide-Gitarrenspiel prägte gemeinsam mit dem rauhen Blues-Organ von Bruder Gregg, der solide geführten zweiten Lead-Gitarre Dickey Betts' und dem dichten Rhythmus- Teppich der beiden Drummer den Gruppen-Sound. Live dehnte das Sextett aus Jacksonville/Forida In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (13'06"), You Don't Love Me (19'18") und natürlich Whipping Post (23'11") zu langen Improvisationsketten, an denen es sich trotz einiger Ego-Trips Duanes in den Olymp des Southern-Rock hangelte. Außer mit unveröffentlichten Fotos im Booklet und dem Prestige wirbt die MFSL-Version auch mit leichten Klangvorteilen für sich: Der auf den Normalausgaben pumpende Baß kommt deutlich präziser, die Höhen etwas klarer und frischer, die Mitten gewinnen an Kontur. Die Fortsetzung des Konzertes gibt es übrigens auch vergoldet: den 33-minütigen Mountain Jam auf Eat A Peach (UDCD 513).

Nicht nur, daß grundsätzlich hochwertige Klangqualität geboten wird - die Gold-CD-Edition des Mobile-Fidelity-Klanglabors bemüht sich immer häufiger um zusätzlichen Kaufanreiz. Im Fall der Allman Brothers Band und ihres legendären Konzertmitschnitts aus Bill Grahams "Fillmore East", dessen Länge (78:51) gerade eben die zulässige Höchstgrenze für eine Einzel-CD überschreitet (oder etwa gerade nicht?), werden ein alternatives Coverfoto sowie ein Booklet mit unveröffentlichten Bandfotos von Jim Marshall und einem Kommentar des Produzenten Tom Dowd mitgeliefert. Indes klingt die preiswertere Standard-CD keinesfalls schlechter.

Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians' interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track. Far from being a sacrilege, this tactic helps present the Allmans in their best light, since even if the music isn't necessarily concise (three tracks run over ten minutes, with two in the 20-minute range), it does showcase the group's terrific instrumental interplay, letting each member (but particularly guitarist Duane and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg) shine. Even after the release of the unedited concerts, this original double album (single CD) remains the pinnacle of the Allmans and Southern rock at its most elastic, bluesy, and jazzy. [In 2004, Mercury reissued At Fillmore East as a hybrid SACD, playable in both regular CD players and Super Audio CD players. On each of the layers, the remastered sound is spectacular, a considerable upgrade from the initial CD pressings.]
