Dieses Bob-Dylan-Set ist einer der fundamentalen Bausteine einer Basis-Rockdiskothek: 53 Songs der Jahre 1962 bis 1981, nahezu alles Wesentliche dabei, auch mal in einer Live- oder Alternativ-Version, und dazu ein gutes Dutzend bislang unveröffentlichter Stücke oder Varianten. Überdies ist das Booklet, inklusive Interview, so attraktiv wie informativ - so sollte eine repräsentative Werkschau aussehen! "Biograph" gibt's jetzt in überarbeiteter Neuauflage. Soll man die neue Box kaufen, wenn man die alte schon hat? Das originale Set erschien im LP-Format - und hat damit die opulentere Optik und das haptische Plus voraus. Dafür verwöhnt die auf kompaktes CD-Format geschrumpfte Remaster-Edition mit teils klarem Klangzugewinn. Der fällt bei den jüngeren Aufnahmen naturgemäß weniger deutlich aus, schwankt aber - bei genereller Pegelanhebung um drei bis fünf dB - auch bei früheren Werken. Ein spektakuläres Beispiel ist "Mixed-Up Confusion": Piano und Harmonika tauchen im remasterten Mix wie aus dem Nichts plastisch auf; vorher hat man diese Instrumente kaum wahrgenommen. Auch die deutlich plastischere Live-Aufnahme "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" trennen Welten von der Ur-Version. Bei "I Shall Be Released" sorgt das Feintuning per Super Bit Mapping "nur" für Rauschreduktion und etwas feineren Klang. Dafür kommt "I Want You" mit wärmerem Sound, viel stärker konturiertem Baß und durch die Bank differenzierterem Klangbild. Also: Die neue "Biograph" sollte man sich gönnen! ** Klang.: 03-04

( 3 CDs; 73:27, 71:55, 71:38 ) "Biograph" war 1985 der erste Versuch des Columbia-Labels, eine repräsentative Werkschau des bedeutendsten amerikanischen Folk/Rockmusikers zu erstellen. Zwar fehlten hier Liebhaberstücke wie "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" oder "Maggie's Farm" - um nur zwei von etwa zwei Dutzend zu nennen. Will man jedoch fast 25 Jahre genialer Songschreiberkunst auf drei CDs komprimieren, müssen wohl Auslassungen hingenommen werden. Immerhin finden sich hier neben den bekannten Hits ("Like A Rolling Stone", "Blowin' In The Wind", Knockin' On Heaven's Door") Raritäten wie die frühen Singles "Mixed-Up Confusion" und "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" und die B-Seite "Groon's Still Waiting At The Altar". Ganze 18 der 53 Songs wurden in dieser Kollektion erstmals veröffentlicht, darunter Titel, nach deren Fertigstellung wohl jeder andere Komponist ein Dankesgebet zum Himmel gesprochen hätte. "Percy's Song" etwa, oder die superben Outtakes "Up To Me" (1974 für "Blood On The Tracks" geplant) und "Abandoned Love" (ein Jahr später bei den "Desire"-Sessions verworfen). Dann die fulminante Live-Fassung von "Isis", 1978 nur auf einem ultrararen Radio-Sampler veröffentlicht. Das Set ist jetzt erneut zu haben, zwar nicht mehr in einer LP-formatigen Box, sondern als schmuckloser Dreierpack. Jedoch wurden alle Songs in Sonys patentiertem "Super Bit Mapping"-Verfahren remastert, und der Klanggewinn ist größtenteils atemberaubend: kaum zu glauben, daß diesselben Bandvorlagen für das Remastering verwendet wurden. Historically, Biograph is significant not for what it did for Dylan's career, but for establishing the box set, complete with hits and rarities, as a viable part of rock history. Following Biograph, multi-disc box sets for veteran rockers became accepted and almost the norm, but that doesn't discount this set's strengths as a summary of Dylan's career, using the familiar and the rare to draw a fully rounded portrait of his strengths as a songwriter, musician, and record-maker in a way that conventional choices alone couldn't achieve. Certainly, the chief attraction of this set, even years after its initial release, is its smattering of rarities that aren't just rare, but revealing — ranging from forgotten rock B-sides and singles to demos, alternate takes, and unreleased songs that rival official releases. But Biograph is really remarkable for weaving these songs into a fabric that reveals the true trajectory of Dylan's career, offering as much to the curious as it does to the dedicated. That sets a standard for box sets that has rarely been matched, making Biograph all the more impressive in retrospect. [In 1997, Columbia Records issued an upgraded, reconfigured version of Biograph, with a new catalog number (65298), a lower list price, and with its packaging and booklet reduced from an LP-size box to a CD-size slipcase. The original 1985 set in the large-size box, which marked the first time that the label had gone back to original first-generation tapes on a Dylan CD, was pretty impressive; but the 1997 CD-size box version, remastered in Sony's Super Bit Mapping process, is a significant improvement over that, and is to be preferred.]
