Für nur eine CD ist dies eine bewunderswerte Chronologie der Karriere des Superstars Eric Clapton, von Mitte der 60er Jahre bis Anfang der 80er. Seine Anfänge bei den Yardbirds und John Mayalls Bluesbreakers wurden hier leider nicht berücksichtigt. Dennoch ist die Cream-Zeit mit "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Crossroads" und "White Room", die Blind Faith-Episode mit "Presence Of The Lord", und schließlich seine Solojahre mit "After Midnight" und "Let It Rain" hier gut vertreten. Es folgt die Zeit bei Derek & The Dominoes, dokumentiert durch "Layla" und "Bell Bottom Blues". Dann folgen noch einige Höhepunkte aus den 70er Jahren ("I Shot The Sheriff", "Cocaine", "Wonderful Tonight" und "Promises") bis hin zu seinem Hit "I Can´t Stand It" aus dem Jahr 1981. Eine satte Sammlung von 18 Titeln. Allerdings zeigt die CD auch glasklar Claptons Einfallslosigkeit in den Mittsiebzigern. Aber dies dürfte für die Fans seiner großen Hits kein Problem darstellen. --Ted Drozdowski

Greatest Hits sind angesagt, in behutsam korrigierter Mischung, und gott- lob liebevoll zubereitet. 18 große Songs, von Cream bis Derek And The Do- minoes, Unvergängliches wie "Cocaine" und "Wonderful Tonight". The 1994 release The Cream of Eric Clapton does a good job of offering an overview of Eric Clapton's best-known songs as a solo artist, as the leader of Derek & The Dominoes and as one third of Cream. Over the course of 18 tracks, all of his biggest hits are here — "Layla" and "Sunshine of Your Love," "Wonderful Tonight" and "After Midnight," etc — and while this doesn't offer everything great he's done by any means, this is nevertheless a useful collection of basics.
