Solche guten Wünsche kann man immer brauchen--die legendäre Sängerin beschenkt ihre Zuhörer nämlich gleichzeitig mit einer modernen und dennoch anheimelnden Zusammenstellung von beliebten Weihnachtssongs. Die First Lady des Jazz nahm diese Stücke 1960 auf, als sie sich auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Könnens befand. So drückt sie allem ihren unvergleichlichen Stempel auf, von dem schmachtenden "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" bis zum gemütlichen "Christmas Song". Selbst oft gehörte Standards wie "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" klingen frischer, wenn sie von Ella Fitzgerald interpretiert werden. --David Sprague

This audiophile CD reissue of Ella Fitzgerald's Christmas record (originally on Verve) brings back a lightweight but enjoyable set of Christmas cheer. Fitzgerald, backed by an orchestra conducted by Frank DeVol and an occasional vocal group, seems to have a good time on straightforward versions of such songs as "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Winter Wonderland" and "Frosty the Snowman." No surprises occur but the music is certainly joyful.
