Als Jean Michel Jarre 1978 Equinoxe herausgab, da hatte er eine Phase drastischer Veränderungen in seinem Leben hinter sich. Mit dem Vorgängeralbum Oxygène war der Musiker aus Lyon über Nacht weltberühmt geworden. Der Millionseller hatte ihn von den tiefsten Nobody-Niederungen in schwindelerregende Starhöhen katapultiert. Dementsprechend hochgesteckt waren die Erwartungen, die man an den Nachfolger knüpfte. Doch Monsieur Jarre ließ sich davon nicht beirren. Er nahm auch Equinoxe wieder daheim in seinem zum 8-Spur-Studio umfunktionierten Wohnzimmer auf und entwickelte seine "Hintergrundmusik fürs alltägliche Leben" (O-Ton Jarre) gelassen weiter.
Die vierte Veröffentlichung im Langspielformat, für die lange vor dem Erscheinungstermin schon 1,5 Millionen Bestellungen vorlagen, legte der Franzose als Konzeptalbum an. In acht sinfonisch anmutenden Instrumentalstücken reflektierte er den Ablauf eines 24-Stunden-Tages, wobei jedes Musikstück eine andere Tages- oder Nachtzeit repräsentierte.
In seinem verkabelten Cockpit, bestehend aus diversen Synthesizern, Mellotron, Vocoder, Rhythmuscomputer und Sequencer, kreierte Jarre seinerzeit einen gefühlvoll-warmen Elektronikklang, der das Vorurteil von den leblosen und steril tönenden Musikmaschinen gründlich widerlegte. Er entlockte den Mikroprozessoren seines Equipments eingängige Ohrwürmer, die mittlerweile so populär sind, daß sie die Spatzen von den Dächern pfeifen. Besonders die zum Mitsingen einladende Komposition "Part V" ist längst so etwas wie ein Gassenhauer des Computerzeitalters. --Harald Kepler

As the follow up album to Oxygene, Equinoxe offers the same mesmerizing affect, with rapid spinning sequencer washes and bubbling synthesizer portions all lilting back and forth to stardust scatterings of electronic pastiches. Using more than 13 different types of synthesizers, Jarre combines whirling soundscapes of multi-textured effects, passages, and sometimes suites to culminate interesting electronic atmospheres. Never repeating the same sounds twice, it is obvious that the science fiction hype of the late 70's played a large part in the making of this album. Computerized rhythms and keyboard-soaked transitions scurry by, replaced by even quicker, more illustrious ones soon after. There is always a pulsating beat or a fluttering tempo happening somewhere in each of the tracks, which are titled as a numbered sequence one to eight. Each track harbors its own energy and electronic fleetness, but none are identical in sound or pace. So much electronic color is added to every track that it is impossible to concentrate on any particular segment, resulting in waves of synth drowning the ears at high tide.
