Niemals waren die Beatles näher an einem Greatest Hits Album als auf diesem Dokument ihrer frühen Karrierejahre. Es finden sich ihre Hitsingles (in zeitlicher Reihenfolge), sowie ausgewählte Albumtracks -- angefangen bei "Love Me Do", bis hin zu den bahnbrechenden Alben Rubber Soul und Revolver. Mag The Beatles 1962-1966 ein wunderbarer Einstieg für Neulinge sein, echte Fans werden sich nie mit bloß einigen Auszügen zufriedengeben, speziell, wenn es um die oben genannten Platten geht. Capitol brachte die Sammlung auf zwei CDs heraus, analog zur originalen Schallplattenveröffentlichung -- aber auf CDs paßt eigentlich wesentlich mehr Musik als auf eine herkömmliche Schallplatte. Trotzdem bekommt man 26 echte Klassiker, also hat man eigentlich keinen Grund, zu klagen. --Bill Holdship

Erfrischend wie ein saftiger Apfel munden die 26 knackigen frühen Beatles-Hits der "roten" Doppel-CD - auch weil Day Tripper, Drive My Car oder Ticket To Ride thematisch perfekt den Punkt treffen.

Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records.
