Elvis Presley veränderte die Welt, als er ganz spontan ein obskures Blues-Stück, das sich "That's All Right" nannte, nahm und es auf Hochtouren brachte. Dieser Augenblick war die Geburtsstunde des Rock 'n' Roll, wenn man diesen Augenblick der Entstehung überhaupt definieren kann. Im Laufe seiner Karriere fiel Elvis Presley Spontaneität immer schwerer. Daher ist diese aus vier CDs bestehende Sammlung von nicht veröffentlichten Versionen, alternativen Aufnahmen und Live-Mitschnitten so kostbar. Die hier zu hörenden Stücke umfassen die Zeit von 1954, als "That's All Right" entstand und reichen bis hin zu Februar 1976, der Zeit der Graceland-Sessions.

Today, Tomorrow & Forever schildert jede Phase der Karriere von Elvis. Häufig geschieht dies auf der Basis von weniger bekannten Ausgangspunkten. Hier sind die schwungvollen, gewitzten Stücke aus den 50er-Jahren, dynamische Versionen von "Heartbreak Hotel", "I Got A Woman" und "Hound Dog", alle vor einem Publikum in ausgelassener Stimmung in Little Rock, Arkansas. Da ist das Matinée-Idol, das versucht, einem immer schwächeren Material doch immer wieder neue Kraft zu vermitteln. Schließlich kommt die Phase des Comeback in den späten 60er-Jahren und die bedrückende Vegas-Attraktion der 70er. Die Stücke aus dieser späten Phase aus dem Leben des Elvis Presley profitieren zumindest davon, dass sie bei ihren Alternativ-Aufnahmen auf ihre wesentlichen Bestandteile reduziert wurden.

Zu loben ist Colin Escotts ungeschminkter Begleittext. "Elvis hatte allen Grund, sich wie ein Schlafwandler durch The Love Machine zu bewegen", bemerkt er zu diesem völlig misslungenen Soundtrack, der Mitte der 60er-Jahre entstand. Zu erwähnen ist die großzügige Auswahl von hervorragenden Fotos, die ein Paket vervollständigen, das ganz sicher den Fans gefallen wird, das aber auch so manchen Neuling auf diesem Gebiet überzeugen wird. --Steven Stolder

A surprising perfectionist, Elvis was known to record dozens of takes for many of his records, often loosening up at the beginning of a session by playing around with different readings of the songs he'd decided to record; and while he got the feel of how he wanted his performances to go, the tape rolled. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of his death, RCA's four-disc Today, Tomorrow, & Forever presented fans with 100 tracks of previously unreleased Presley, a parade of alternate takes -- both very welcome and curiously not so -- and scattered live recordings from throughout his career. (Although not a career record, the version of 1958's "Doncha' Think It's Time" used here was the 48th, and final take.) Among the highlights: seven songs from an incendiary set recorded in Arkansas on May 16, 1956, a 1959 version of "The Fool" recorded with Elvis alone at the piano while serving in Germany, and a few songs each of previously unreleased material from his first two seasons at Las Vegas' International Hotel, in 1969 and 1970. It's not clear, however, why the compilers deemed it necessary to include almost two dozen selections from the notoriously weak material used on Presley's '60s soundtracks, including "The Love Machine" (which the liners admit is "a ghastly song") and "My Desert Serenade" (with the added apology/defense, "he had every reason to sound desperately uncomfortable"). RCA certainly deserves credit for refusing to pad this collection with hits or old material unnecessary for collectors, but that's really the only audience left interested by this exhaustive display.
